Summoning

Summoning is the deliberate act of calling a spirit, deity, or force into manifest presence with the intent of direct engagement. It differs from invocation, which invites a presence into shared space with reverence, and from evocation, which channels a being into a prepared boundary for dialogue. Summoning is sharper, more forceful: it is a magical demand for arrival. For this reason, it has always been considered one of the most perilous branches of the art.

Historically, summoning occupies an uneasy place. In the ancient Mediterranean, priests and oracles called gods or heroes into sacred space through offerings, chants, and smoke. Medieval grimoires, such as the Key of Solomon and The Lemegeton, codified rituals of summoning spirits and intelligences, complete with circles, seals, and binding words. These rites were often practiced by clergy themselves, yet accused of arrogance for compelling spirits under command rather than devotion. Summoners were not always treated like witches, but their magic was suspect: a scholarly sorcery whose risks often outweighed its promises.

In modern times, summoning has been watered down in popular culture, fantasy, and gaming. There it is portrayed as easy—an instant call to conjure elementals or monsters at will. In truth, real summoning is neither simple nor common. It requires precise timing, elaborate preparation, and deep knowledge of protective and dismissive techniques. To treat summoning as spectacle is to misunderstand it entirely: it is not a casual trick, but an engagement with beings who exist beyond human control.

In practice, summoning stands at the crossroads of many other arts. It relies on protection magic to shield the circle, and on banishing and binding to contain what arrives. It makes frequent use of sigils, seals, and sacred names as addresses in the unseen. It demands the interpretive skill of divination and scrying, for spirits rarely speak in plain words. It often calls for offerings or sacrifice, to honor the exchange and ease dismissal. Summoning is most often placed within high ritual magic, timed to planetary hours or lunar tides, though echoes of it remain in folk traditions that call spirits of place or ancestors to attend.

Within the Coven of the Veiled Moon, summoning is reserved for necessity. It is never undertaken lightly, and never without the full consent of those present. Circles are cast and reinforced, guardians invoked, dismissal rites prepared, and offerings consecrated before the first summons is spoken. We regard the dismissal as equally vital as the arrival: what is called must be sent back cleanly, lest imbalance linger in its wake. Summoning for us is not an act of domination, but a dialogue under carefully held boundaries.

Note: Summoning is the most dangerous of calling practices. To summon is to take full responsibility for what enters and for ensuring it departs. Without caution, circles can break, entities may linger, and bonds can tangle beyond repair. Spirits called by compulsion rather than respect may resist, deceive, or retaliate. Deities, in particular, must never be treated as servants to command.
