Sympathetic Magic
Sympathetic magic rests on the ancient principle that “like affects like” — that a symbol, action, or object resembling or connected to something can be used to influence it across distance or circumstance. This manifests in two main forms: similarity, where a representation is used to echo the desired outcome (such as a poppet standing for a person); and contagion, where something once in contact with the target (hair, clothing, soil from a place) maintains an energetic bond that can be worked through. At its root is the belief that connections, once made, continue to carry force, and that these bonds can be activated by intention.
This principle is woven throughout the history of magic. Ancient peoples drew images of animals to ensure a successful hunt, sowed seeds in patterns to encourage fertility, or marked bodies with paint to call down protective powers. Folk traditions across cultures employ poppets, charms, or witch bottles to protect, heal, or banish. In ceremonial magic, whole temples or ritual spaces may be constructed as microcosms of the cosmos, so that the magician’s work within them resonates outward. Even modern witchcraft retains the same current: spell jars, altar correspondences, and knot-work all operate on sympathetic logic.
Sympathetic magic rarely stands alone; it thrives in combination. With sigils , the symbol is distilled into a personal glyph and charged, layering the “like attracts like” principle with will be condensed into form. In herbalism, plants chosen for their symbolic or energetic associations are placed in jars, bundles, or charms to extend their influence into the practitioner’s life. Within seasonal rituals , actions performed at the right point in the year symbolically echo the turning of the larger cycles, aligning the microcosm of ritual with the macrocosm of the world. Even invocation and evocation often rely on sympathetic structures, with names, seals, and correspondences acting as symbolic “keys” to connect the magician to the presence invoked. In high magic, sympathetic techniques build the architecture that allows power to flow. In low and folk magic, they become the thread that ties personal action to cosmic currents.
Within the Coven of the Veiled Moon, sympathetic magic is considered one of the great teaching tools. It is both simple and profound — a way to make magical correspondences tangible, while also being a core method in advanced work. Newer practitioners learn through sympathetic exercises like knotting cords, creating poppets, or crafting charms. More advanced workings might involve constructing altars that mirror desired outcomes, layering symbols, offerings, and elements to create a living sympathetic link. We understand sympathetic practice not as a trick but as a philosophy: the world is a web of connections, and to weave those connections mindfully is to participate in its continual shaping.
Examples:
- Healing poppet — a small figure created to represent a person, filled with herbs like rosemary and lavender, wrapped in white cloth, and placed on an altar with a candle of healing intent.
- Prosperity bowl — a vessel filled with coins, grains, and a green candle, each symbolizing abundance and growth, tended over time as a focus for financial wellbeing.
- Knot binding — a length of cord in which knots are tied, each one securing a specific intention to limit harmful influence or to hold protective energy.
- Mirror altar — arranging objects, colors, and tools to reflect a desired future state (peace, abundance, love), building a sympathetic bridge that calls that reality closer.
Note: Sympathetic magic succeeds when the links between symbol and intention are meaningful and aligned. A bowl of coins will not draw prosperity if it has no symbolic weight to the practitioner, and a poppet without connection to its intended target may carry no charge. Misused or carelessly aligned symbols often lead not to catastrophe but to misfire — energy dispersing without effect. The integrity of the connection matters. Practitioners must remember that sympathetic magic magnifies what is placed within it; a working clouded with confusion or mixed signals produces muddled results. When done with clarity and care, however, sympathetic practice becomes one of the most effective and enduring forms of magic, for it mirrors the very way the world itself is woven: through bonds of resemblance and connection.
